My needs for this DIY Dispenser

I had a lush 50 gallons green aquarium planted with green aquarium plants and I found troubles on maintaining it's boggy appeal. I have researched the internet for things and facts needed to keep them green. My aquarium set up was with working trickle filter and a submersible pump, 50 watts lighting fixture, coarse gravel substrate on the background and a fine sand in the foreground (which was embedded with tablet fertilizers) set up with a terrace appeal, a water logged driftwood, few charming fish, and a DIY carbon dioxide generator. The problem I had was not knowing when would those tablet fertilizers ran out of its juice, thus resulting into some withered, pale, spindled stem plants. So I decided to make a trickle dispenser fertilizer for my aquarium.

DIY Fertilizer Dispenser

Things you'll need

pet bottle(500ml)

pins

small nail

liquid fertilizers

tap water

cloth

hammer

the desire to build one

Here's how to do it.

  1. Wash your 500ml pet bottle to get rid of any unwanted residue and make it aquarium friendly. You can do remove the labeling if you wish to, only if it does bothers you. Mine I did rip off the label so as to make it clear enabling me to see whats happening inside the bottle.
  2. Pinch a hole in the cap of the pet bottle, this shall serve as the decanter for your fertilizer dispenser. Might as well to make a hole with the right ratio for your tank. Big tank more plants, more plants more fertilizer. I did mine with small nail, which I believe looks good enough for my tank.
  3. Pour in tap water into your bottle, just about 3/4 of the entire capacity of your pet bottle. This will allow some air to control droplets of your diy fertilizer dispenser.
  4. Mix in and dissolved 4 to 5 tablets of aquarium plant fertilizers, well I do recommend pulverizing it first using a hammer and a cloth, powder seem to dissolved faster than one solid tablet, right?
  5. After the mixing, with a clear bottle you can obviously see if your arms did the shaking well, you know what I mean. Tighten the cap and invert the bottle. You can try putting a cup to cath the first droplets, well if not, you can do the floor mopping later.
  6. Now pinch a pin hole on the bottom of the bottle. 10 holes would give you a droplet 2 to 3 times a minute. Well if you want more droplets you can add some more pinholes depending on how you prefer your dispenser to work for you.The idea is the pin holes in the bottom part will allow just enough air to lessen the vacuumed air and thus allowing for the liquid to drop trough the bottle cap.
  7. Now, after all the pinching, place the inverted bottle on top of your aquarium. Then voila, you have just made your own liqiud fertilzer dispenser for your tank. Enjoy.

Now you can always add up your ideas in this hub, I'll be more interested if you yourself had some innovations in mind. I love to hear some feed back from you, share your ideas on making this one even better. Good luck,. by the way before I forget, now you can do the floor mopping, and clean up you mess.
